Property Location Description
Panormo or Panormos is a seaside settlement in the municipality of Mylopotamos, in the peripheral unit of Rethymno, located in the center of the northern road axis of Crete (B.O.A.K.), 20 km east of Rethymno and 55 km west of Heraklion. It is a quiet tourist resort, which has developed strongly in recent years, without losing its traditional form.
In Panormos there are two large beaches and some smaller ones. Limanaki beach is located in front of the village and serves the port of Panormos. It is sandy and has clear waters. It is mostly family, due to the shallow water and organized, with umbrellas, showers, water sports and all the possibilities of living around. To the east there is a pier that embraces the beach, full of fishing boats and small boats. The west beach of the area is located just 200m. west of the village, equally sandy and organized, with shallow waters and cavernous formations.
Remarkable nearby beach is the beach of Geropotamos under the bridge of the National Road, while at the lighthouse of Cape Chondrokavos, about 800 meters from the village, visitors and locals are given the opportunity to enjoy a magnificent sunset, equal or more intoxicating from that of Santorini.
An important addition for every nature lover is the existence of a fishing shelter in Panormo, which was created in the 1980s, when the crossing of the new national road was prepared.
One of the most important sights of the settlement is the largest early Christian Basilica of Crete, Hagia Sophia, dating to the 5th century AD. The Castle of Mylopotamos, one of the many fortresses of Crete, was built on the steep shores of Panormos by a Genoese pirate and was named Castel Milopotamo. The settlement of Panormos developed around it, however, unfortunately today only a few remains of this imposing fortress and the church of Ai Giorgis are preserved.
The reference point is the Carob Mill of Panormos, an old locust processing warehouse that was turned into a place for cultural events, attracting visitors from all over Crete every year.
Panormo over the centuries. From Ptolemy I of the 3rd century AD, to the Genoese pirates and then to the Venetian rule and the Turks. Initially the town was named Kastelli, because of the fortress and then it was renamed Panormos, probably because of a church dedicated to St. George Panormos. A point of historical controversy, such as in 1905, where Cretans, gathered in the port of the settlement, demanded the unification of Crete with the rest of Greece and that in retaliation, a Russian war bombarded the entire town. Since then the settlement acquires increasing traffic and flourishing, as its port was a transit means for the trade of products, while a decisive change was played in 1980, when the crossing of the new national road (A 90 – E 75) from its outskirts, the creation fishing shelter and the occupation of the current port, put Panormo on the tourist map of the area.
The settlement of Panormos today, is included in the top tourist destinations of every visitor of the island. Numerous hotels of all categories and tourist apartments, shops, traditional cafes and cafes, fish taverns by the sea, events and water sports, are just a few of what is offered. In the village there plenty of festivals every year: the Ascension, St. John of Klidon on June 24, St. Nicholas on December 6 and on December 23 the honor the memory of the local saint Agios Agapodos.
Access from Rethymno is easy with regular bus services, while the residents, always with a smile, are there to teach Cretan hospitality. It is worth visiting nearby villages, with great interest, such as Exantis and Skepasti about 5 and 11 kilometers east of Panormos, the famous for the ceramic village of Margarita, and Ancient Eleftherna with its inexhaustible archaeological wealth.
